Abstract
Large span structures are widely used in modern buildings because of their novel forms or shapes, light self-weight and lower construction cost. The large steel structures are usually built as the public buildings, so the safety in the service period is widely concerned. The reasonable safety assessment of existing large span steel structures is one of the national disaster prevention policies in civil engineering. However, the current safety assessment methods are mostly focused on existing masonry or concrete structures. Few papers or research references about safety assessment of existing large span steel structures have been found. Based on the systematic science method and according to the reliability indices of the structural members under ultimate state specified in the reference [1], a new safety assessment guide line of existing steel structural members is proposed. The load model and the resistance model of a steel member are discussed in the paper. The safety grades of members of existing large span structures are divided after the reliability analysis. The safety assessment method of the existing large span structures is proposed by considering the influence of member importance.
