Structural Morphology is the meeting point between designers. This paper is a contribution to the debate on the identity of designers that goes beyond the classical recurrent fight between architects and engineers. In a first part some historic landmarks are described, before giving some examples of famous designers like G. Eiffel, F. Candela, H. Isler and F. Otto. All of them are recognized for their achievements and the associate design conditions are examined. The second part opens the question of identity under a double approach: identification of the designer of a specific construction, and study of their mental process during the conceptual design phases. Some first results concerning perception, long term memory and working memory are presented with the help of cognitive sciences. Imaginative skills cannot be separated from logical reasoning skills.
