This paper explores Generative Design by means of a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) application that is driven by an evolutionary algorithm. Confronted with growing complexity structural engineers should redefine their strategies that are highly focused on simplifications and mechanical systems. A conceptual approach based on patterns could be a more adequate strategy that could help with complex structures. On one hand the pattern stands for the composition of a physical structure (or a data structure respectively) and on the other hand the pattern is an example or a sample representing a phenotype. The pattern has an enormous potential for interdisciplinary collaborations. The invention and the recombination of code patterns will help us create an architecture emerging from an integration of building concepts with physical design aspects.
