In this paper, a new explicit solution of inclined single cable is derived with the equilibrium and geometrical conditions considered. Combining the analytical solution and virtual work principles, the authors propose a new two-node catenary cable element. By comparing with the stiffness matrix of the traditional two-node straight-line cable element, the authors give out the simplified stiffness matrix of the new cable element and the nonlinear analysis procedure considering the factor of the stiffness changing with cable’s sag. This cable element has the advantage of high computing precision compared with multi-node cable element [11, 12] and its stiffness matrix also has very simple form like two-node straight-line cable element. Finally, two numerical examples show the validity and the accuracy of the new cable element and the reliability of the nonlinear procedure.
