As a geometrically flexible system, studies of the behaviour of cable domes should take into account the nonlinear feature and the existence of the prestressing force. In this paper a mixed nonlinear finite element equation of cable domes is first established and solved by combining two-node bar elements and two-node curved cable elements. Then a physical model with 5m diameter is tested to investigate the static response of a cable dome under symmetric and anti-symmetric loads. The experimental results show good consistency with the analytical results, which verifies that the proposed nonlinear analytical model is reliable. Further conclusions are obtained at the end of the paper.
