This paper presents a method that allows to establish characteristic dimensions range values of shells, to make easier the work of the designers. An optimization technique that minimizes displacements has been employed. With this aim, a parameter called Volumetric Displacement that considers the displacements produced in all the structure, is introduced as the objective function. The approximation technique used to calculate the displacements, which are needed to evaluate the objective function, was the Finite Element Method. To illustrate the validity of the proposed method, this procedure is used for the optimization of the different structural elements, that are part of a concrete straight edges Hyperbolic Paraboloid. This geometry has been chosen because it is one of the most used, enables comparison with the results found by other authors and the design recommendations traditionally adopted.
