The purpose of this paper is to consider the construction of multi-reciprocal grid (MRG) space structures using notched elements at joint connection points. The MRG system is made up of members mutually supporting one another to form two and three-dimensional grid structures. At any joint location within the grid it is only necessary for two members to be connected to each other in order to make up a complete joint node and hence module which may consist of any number of elements. This is a typical feature of a MRG joint system and has potentially economic advantages over traditional space grid connections that are very often complex and therefore expensive. Potential applications of the MRG system range from the construction sector to relief work. The advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of notched elements for MRG space structure construction will be highlighted and reviewed with practical aspects discussed in detail.
