  • Title: Thin Shell Masonry Domes for Low-Cost Housing

Shell structures are known to be robust by virtue of their shape, which inherently minimizes material usage. A low-cost housing structure is proposed in the shape of a dome, which incorporates several unique characteristics, such as vertically orientated foundations, balloon formwork and stitching reinforcement to resist tension forces in the shell. A cement stabilized soil brick is also utilized to minimize costs and promote a sustainable structure. A prototype dome was constructed, implementing the design principles discussed in this paper.
