In designing space trusses, many decisions need to be taken concerning the truss configuration, span/depth ratio and span/panel-width ratio. Changing any of these factors results in a notable alteration in truss stiffness, weight and degree of statical redundancy. The truss competitiveness also changes as the truss appearance and number of joints and members (and hence cost) depend on the same factors. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the factors that affect space truss design most. The aim is to provide clear recommendations for the choice of optimum span/depth ratio and span/panel-width ratio in different situations. The effect of truss configuration is also considered. Focus in this study is on weight comparisons between the different cases, although reference is also made to other important parameters such as number of joints and members.
