Abstract
The present study proposes a new proportioning method how to decide the cross sections of the members in single layered reticular shells. The method considers elasto-plastic behaviors of the members, the member instability and the global shell buckling with imperfection sensitivity. The procedure for proportioning includes; (1) a second-order elastic analysis to evaluate the equivalent slenderness ratio of each member, (2) a column buckling concept to calculate the column buckling strength of each member, and (3) estimation of the imperfection sensitivity based on the knockdown factor for shell-like buckling. The validity of the method is proven by showing that roof-typed cylindrical reticular shells designed by the present procedure accurately satisfy their required ultimate design loads.
