Abstract
Earlier studies reported significant benefits to space truss behaviour due to composite action with a top continuum. Focus has so far been on top concrete slabs as possible additions to space trusses in order to develop composite action. This paper extends the concept of composite action to cases where space trusses are covered with top timber boards. A simple device has been designed to attach timber boards to space truss top joints in an efficient way so that a high level of shear interaction is developed. An experimental programme involving composite and non-composite space truss models is also discussed in this paper and from the results obtained, an assessment of the effects of composite action with top timber boards is presented.
