Abstract
This paper addresses failure mechanisms of single-layer reticulated domes subjected to dynamic loads. Two failure modes – dynamic instability and dynamic strength failure – are discussed systematically. Based on responses of the structures under harmonic actions, a criterion is proposed to discriminate which failure mode governs. In addition, a measure of material damage accumulation is proposed for analysis of single-layer reticulated domes subjected to earthquakes. This damage model applies to the method for discrimination of failure mode based on the different structural damage levels. Finally, a simplified method for obtaining the ultimate failure load is proposed.
