Abstract
A method is developed to predict the dynamic response of large cable assemblies, based on step - by - step time integration techniques. It is essentially an approach based upon the principle of conservation of energy. Starting from these considerations the special cases of steady state vibration and the response to static loads are derived. The general dynamic response is then developed by taking into account more terms in the energy equation. All non-linear effects whether are due to large displacements, or to material properties or to partial failure can be included in the energy formulation. After the mathematical expressions of the energy terms have been formulated in terms of the element properties and the unknown nodal displacements, the algorithm of the conjugate gradients is applied to calculate the set of displacements that minimize the energy work functional. Results of static and dynamic tests carried out on a saddle shaped cable net structure are included.
