Abstract
Reinforced concrete (R/C) cooling towers are subjected to wind load and/or earthquake load and self weight. A R/C cooling tower is a large thin shell structure. Therefore, it is important to assess the buckling capacity and the ultimate strength. In this paper R/C cooling tower shells are analyzed by use of the nonlinear finite element method from the above viewpoint. The main objectives of this study are as follows: First the relations between the ultimate strength and the reinforcing ratio are studied, and the reduction of the ultimate strength due to the amount and the placement method of reinforcement is investigated. Secondly, the influence of geometric initial imperfections on the ultimate strength of R/C cooling tower shells is analyzed. Finally the relations between the numerical results and the recommendations are discussed.
