Abstract
Through the analysis of two case studies – the design of St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco and Newark International Airport (NJ) – the author underlines the role of reduced scale models in Pier Luigi Nervi’s work and his approach to the design of HP shells during the Sixties. The paper, derived from the author’s PhD thesis, is based on wide-ranging research carried out in various archives in Italy, Europe and the U.S. The last part of the paper also reveals how design methods for shells were changing fast in those years, thanks to the development of computers and FEM.
