Abstract
A new force method model is proposed to analyse the dynamic behaviour of cable trusses. In the paper, the D’Alembert traveling wave method is employed to solve the governing partial differential equation (equation of motion) after the cable truss structures are extended to infinity and the support reaction forces considered as excitations. Substituting the D’Alembert solution into the compatibility and boundary conditions, the system is reduced to an ordinary differential equation with only one unknown, the dynamic tension increment. This equation is named force method dynamic equation (FMDE). Based on FMDE, the exact solution of the system is obtained. The natural frequencies derived from FMDE are shown to be identical to those deduced using the conventional displacement method (DM). At last, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the accuracy of proposed force method for a suspended cable truss subjected to harmonic excitations and earthquake excitations.
