Abstract
One of the ways of reducing vibrations of steel tower-like structures is the application of tuned mass dampers (TMD). Obtaining the desired vibration reduction requires making sure that the realized parameters of TMD are as close as possible to the optimum ones. In order to comply with the above requirements it is necessary to perform experimental investigations on the structure after the TMD installation. During an experiment, the elements forming a TMD can be suitably modified to tune the TMD to the dynamic characteristics of the realized structure. This problem is presented in the paper. An example of practical realization of tuning of a TMD cooperating with a 41,5 m high chimney of external diameter of 2,12 m, is given. The procedure of TMD tuning described in the paper enables to achieve effective reduction of structure vibrations.
