Abstract
This paper carries out an investigation of the overall self-stress modes and of the optimal prestress design of the Kiewitt dome. The analysis shows that the number of overall self-stress mode number increases regularly with the addition of hoop cables. A new overall self-stress modes analysis method that takes advantage of symmetry is proposed. This method is applicable to cable domes with either single or multiple overall self-stress modes. Based on the self-stress modes analysis, the prestress design of Kiewitt dome is optimized, taking the minimum initial strain energy as objective function. A laboratory model is designed to validate the proposed method. The agreement between the measured values and the computed results indicates the validity and accuracy of the proposed methods and the designed model structure.
