Abstract
The aim of the present paper is to provide a state of the art report of currently published biaxial tensile test procedures together with correlated evaluation procedures. The investigations show a great spectrum of resulting fictitious elastic constants (tensile stiffness and Poisson’s ratio) that can be determined for one fabric material on the basis of the different established procedures. In the analysis of tensile membrane structures this range of fictitious elastic constants results in a spectrum of computed stress and deformation values for one and the same structure and load case. The great range of structural analysis results due to that variety of possible stiffness parameters is demonstrated for one exemplary membrane structure with different magnitudes of curvature. Furthermore, this paper provides guidance regarding how to evaluate sets of elastic constants and how to modify the evaluation of experimental biaxial tests in order to minimize the uncertainties left to the design engineer. Information is also provided concerning the applicability of the investigated procedures.
