Abstract
This paper addresses some of the aesthetic and ethical issues related to the recent emergence of free-form designs in contemporary architecture. It discusses the origins of this formal shift, its socio-economic and political background (the so-called “Bilbao Effect”) and the relationships between free-form architecture and structural and environmental performance. The concluding proposition is that the sinuous, highly curvilinear forms could become not only an expression of new aesthetics, or a particular cultural and socio-economic moment born out of the digital revolution, but also an optimal formal expression for the new ecological consciousness that calls for sustainable building.
