Today, powerful algorithms for surface and solid geometrical modeling allow an unprecedented morphological freedom (FFD) that could not have been imagined earlier in the world of architectural conceptual design. The fast dissemination of FFD and the associated applications to free form buildings (FFB), some of them representative of a new trend for the history of architecture, has brought an “innovation concern” in the traditional design methodology of structural engineering, generating process uncertainties in reliability assessment in general and structural safety warnings in particular. On the other hand, imitation and originality at any cost, achievable thanks to FFD’s user-friendly facilities, lead to ethical problems of sustainability in the technical, cultural and economical fields. The FAST (Function Analysis System Technique) may help to obtain the “best fitting” design solution.
