This paper presents a discussion of the relationship between structural design and computational design strategies in a context of free form buildings and structures. Free form design, which should not be only seen as geometrical advanced design, poses several challenges for the designing structural engineer, but can also play an important role in renewed investment in structural design values and philosophies, such as integral or Total Design. Computation plays an essential role in free form design, as an enabler as well as a challenge for the engineering disciplines. This paper gives an overview of the concepts and challenges that computational strategies in relationship to structural design will need to address to become successful, assuming that a user-centred development will be beneficial for acceptance of the computational strategies by engineers of the future. It also shows that computational strategies are not only a challenge for structural design, but potentially can also prove to become an important factor in the strive towards further rationalisation of free form design and the explorations part of free form design strategies, as well as the inclusion of more and more advanced computation in the structural design process.
