Abstract
When subjected to cyclic horizontal earthquake load, large accumulated deflection arises at the crown of steel moment frames. This paper discusses the mechanism and a quantitative evaluation on this deflection. We performed FEM analysis of some steel moment frames subjected to cyclic horizontal and constant vertical loads. All of the models caused yield of the panel zones. It is found that the accumulated deflection especially increases when a plastic hinge occurs on only one end of the girder. Based on this mechanism, we developed an equation to estimate the vertical deflection and verified by comparing with the FE analysis.
