Abstract
This study explores the structural morphogenesis method of frame structures based on the self-adapting function of a linkage mechanism system that searches for the reasonable shape of a frame structure. In deriving an equation for shape changing a number of 'element groups' in a mechanism system are predefined such that each 'element group' must have a constant summation of element (rod) lengths. This equation is solved using the generalised inverse matrix theory together with the principle of the maximised gradient of potential energy increment with the variations in the system shape. An iterative process is used to find the final shape of the mechanism system which corresponds to an optimised structural shape that features a predominant axial force and a small bending moment under a specific loading pattern applied to the mechanism system. A control norm is proposed to seek a reasonable frame structure shape that is consistent with the designer's intentions.
