Abstract
In this paper structural design of a church of reinforced concrete thin shell is presented with emphasis on earthquake resistant design. The church was designed by an architect, I. M. Pei, and it has been recently realized in Japan. A procedure and policy for the structural design, needless to say that earthquake resistant design is a key point in Japan, is summarized by describing how and why a reinfoeced concrete shell was selected, and by considering not only its demand seismicity by law but also from a view point of how and what magnitude of earthquakes the structure bear severe external loads.
