Abstract
This contribution addresses bio-based materials and timber construction in the light of contemporary needs for improved resource efficiency and links them to the relation between forestry, material properties, products provided by industry and currently rising societal demands for reduced energy consumption and building costs. The paper discusses the currently urgent needs for changes in the construction industry, plausible ecological consequences of these changes and to some extent the forestry industries’ role as supplier of the material properties available on the construction market.
