Abstract
Starting from the studies on geodesic domical structures, or domes, developed by Richard Buckminster Fuller, as well as researches on bamboo initiated around 30 years ago at PUC-Rio, conducted by the Laboratory for Investigation in Living Design, permitted the application of bamboo culms to the geodesic geometry in an intuitive and economical way. The novelty presented was a join solution. Different from the punctual joint employed by Fuller, this new technique of tying up the bamboo tips in pairs solidarize all the structure and eliminates the need of special pieces. Furthermore, this joint, also called “Spin”, adapts very well to the particular mechanics of bamboo. This innovation allowed the popularization of the object called “Domus”, and its variations, in the most diverse applications in the Brazilian social/geographical realities. Finally, the article presents the current state of development of the geodesic structures in the laboratory, which aim at improving the use of structure qualities of the bamboo culms.
