Abstract
The creative works of Pier Luigi Nervi in architecture, engineering and construction have received wide attention and well deserved recognition around the globe. It is believed that to preserve Nervi’s legacy for all time to come there is a need to bring the design concepts and accomplishments of this creative genius into the mainstream of architectural and engineering education. This paper presents the results of a study to analyze and develop conceptual models of understanding the design processes of Nervi’s projects especially those located in seismic zones. It is believed that such conceptual models of understanding the development and behavior of structural systems in Nervi’s projects will strengthen the education of architects and structural engineers of tomorrow. This paper presents a suggested approach for advancing the cause of engineering and architectural education based on a study and analysis of Nervi’s selected works located in seismic zones. Nervi’s sports palace in Rome is used as a case-study for study of reinforced concrete structural systems in seismic zones. Recent exhibitions of the works of Nervi have served as an important contribution to the understanding of the construction process implemented by Nervi in the Sport’s Palace in Rome.
