Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide the structural design of the public university library which is operated for 24 hours a day with a wooden structural space. The university(Akita International University) offers the courses all in English, which is quite rare in this country. Providing a space to raise up the concentration for the study will definitely contribute to the future of Japan.. The library is located on the heavy snow area and mainly designed with a wood frame structure The interior space forms semi-cylindrical shape, which evokes the Coliseum to people. The shape makes the people’s sense approach to the center to stir up working quality and this expects an effect to arouse the user’s motivation for learning. Providing a roof , which is able to withstand to a huge accumulated snow and simultaneously not to let it fall, two steps of flat shaped roof constructed with a local lumbers and structural steels(so called hybrid structure) are adopted. Between two flat roofs, continuous beams are installed so that the people inside the library can feel the sunbeam as like it shines through the branches of trees.
