Abstract
Space trusses made of steel bars are very frequently used for the construction of large span roofs. Such structures consist of steel tubes with the ends flattened, connected at nodes with a single bolts. In Brazil, such connection is produced by stamping the ends of the bars, generating a very low cost connection. However, several accidents with space structures using this type of connection have been reported in Brazil. This research proposes the use of simple constructive corrections in the connection in order to increase the loading capacity of such space trusses. This research is based on computer simulations and experimental lab tests, the introduction of small changes on the staking end-flattened connections such as reinforcement and eccentricity correction are evaluated. The results show an increase of 68% for local collapse and 17% for global collapse in the truss load carrying capacity when the suggested constructive corrections proposed in this article are used.
