Abstract
The ultimate bearing capacity of a new type of cold-formed four-limbs built-up column under axial compression was studied in this paper. The finite element model considering the geometric, material and contact nonlinear properties was built to simulate such column and was then validated with the experiment result. Based on this varified model, a series of parametric studies were conducted to investigate the influence of slenderness ratio, screw spacing and width-to-thickness ratio of plate on its ultimate bearing capacity. The bearing capacities of specimens with variable dimensions were also calculated and compared with the result according to specification design rules based on both effective width method and direct strength method. It is concluded that the result according to the effective width method are relatively conservative, while the direct strength method could provide a better evaluation of the ultimate bearing capacity for this cold-formed four-limbs built-up column.
