Abstract
In the study, the employment of axial typed damping devices made of smart metals are attempted for seismic performance upgrading of a long-span space truss structure and damage control effectiveness of such damping devices to protect the structure under strong earthquakes is numerically studied. Smart metals of 5083 aluminum alloy are chosen to use. Complex elasto-plastic time history analyses under various ground motions representing major earthquake events is performed to investigate the effect of seismic performance upgrading when installing damping devices at certain locations. Displacement indices, which include the maximum deformation and the residual deformation, are investigated. Moreover, stress-strain based indices for typical members in the truss structure are also explored. Comparisons with the seismic behaviors of the structure with traditional mild steel BRBs, the design suggestions for installing different damping devices are discussed.
