Abstract
In order to investigate the practical application value of cold-formed thin-walled steel quadruple-limb built-up box column, 12 full-scale specimens were tested so as to study their failure mechanism and corresponding ultimate strength under compression. The built-up box column consists of two C shape and two U shape components, three level sections with different dimensions were adopted for the comparison. Built-up sections were erected by self-drilling screws with 300mm spacing on each face. Additional enhanced loading zone was welded to the column tips to guarantee the loading uniformity and ideal failure mode. Experimental results indicate that even though the local buckling mode was sudden, there always exists a large wavy deformation prior to buckling. This type of build-up column shows a good integrity, no nails peeling or cutting was observed during the test. The following numerical simulation results agree the experiment very well. The test value from the experiment is much higher than theoretical value according to the China Code (GB50018). Overall, this type of column has a wide practical value in the future application.
