Abstract
The natural vibration period is critical parameter for the structural design of super -tall buildings under seismic action and wind loading. Long structural period of super- tall building may not only raise the possibility of strength failure during extreme earthquake and wind events, but also will cause human comfort problems under normal operation situation. An effective design strategy commonly applied in the current structural design practice of super-tall buildings is to set some period limitations during the design. A reasonable arrangement of materials is conducive to limit the period. The traditional design of tall buildings is a trial-and-error procedure that relies heavily on engineers’ experience and intuition. Although the final period of the optimized structures may be close to the target period, the optimization process is lack of directionality and time-consuming. This paper presents a sensitivity analysis method for optimization designs under period constraint. In the process of analysis, sensitivity indexes of members are calculated to instruct the material distribution directionally. A 700m high super-tall building is illustrated to prove the effectiveness of the sensitivity analysis method and some suggestions and remarks are provided for optimization design of tall buildings under period constraint.
