Abstract
This work is focused on the effect of increasing the number of design variables on the performance and computational cost of optimizing a plain concrete cylindrical roof shell under earthquake loading. The case study explores the whole spectrum between using very few variables, and using as many as nodes in the FEA mesh. Based on the results, the promises, challenges, advantages, and disadvantages of each extreme method are discussed to provide insights into future studies on better representation methods that may lead to higher performances and more robust designs.
